what an incredible job you have done with this! I enjoy reading about this!
How I did it: I've been volunteering in Nepal since Dec. 2007. Through this process my friends and I have had the opportunity to develop a nonprofit organization that works to support educational scholarships, build community children's libraries, and help support community schools for underprivileged children from the lowest 'untouchable' castes

Lessons & tips: In order to start a nonprofit and raise funds to support others in a different country other than your own ~ you first need to have a passion for the work! You need a few people who believe in the cause as well and are committed to working with you locally. It is imperative that you have someone in the home country that you trust and who can organize, oversee, and navigate the administrative, political, social, and cultural aspects of the projects to be handled.
Resources: Research how to create a nonprofit, network, share your story, work hard and be creative in raising funds. Have local community members who are honest and hardworking and who share mutual beliefs and goals.

Thank you for writing this. I have a friend who made it her mission to raise money for some children in Mexico who live in a dump, so they can have school tuition. She’s just doing it on her own, but maybe it would be a good idea for her to upgrade her outreach into a nonprofit and expand her ability to help from three children to something wider.
Whether that happens or not, though, this was inspirational. Thank you.

I think you have a great idea to share with your friend ~ and sometimes….it is the smallest idea and nudge that moves us in a particular direction ~ that is how it’s been for me….
AND…. most of these ideas and nudges have come from my friends here ~
Namaste my Friend ~
Thank you for your inspiration as well!!!

But does your nonprofit has the 501c3 status so people can get a tax deduction?
If yes, how can you do it? I was researching about starting a nonprofit here that helps back in my country but I’m not sure what term to search for. I thought “international nonprofit” (lol) but couldn’t find anything so far about getting the 501c3 status.
ps: I love what you have been doing! From your “how i did it” stories, it seems to me that you started small, first teaching English and slowly getting more involved until you created the library. I didn’t know they sold their children in Nepal too; I thought it was only in Cambodia and Vietnam. I read once a story about a 7yo girl who was sold to work; she was forced into prostitution and finally escaped when she was 10.

yes…
we are a 501©3 status….
People DO get a tax break (in the USA) when they donate to NNHHC.
How you do it is,
first became a nonprofit…
then second, apply for 501©3 status…
That means…an extra $400.00 dollars to the IRS and a process of presenting your organization and the work you are doing in a very detailed 20 page application. If they “approve” it ~ you will receive a letter that gives you your tax ID nonprofit number.
:D
It’s a long process, but worth it! BEST WISHES
I highly recommend going for it!

The IRS loves some money!
Thanks for replying so fast! I thought there was a different route for the people who wants to help in a foreign country.
