How to accept art commissions and finish them.
"One key to offering- and getting commissions- is knowing how to market yourself."
How I did it: First of all, I had to have a plan, and I had to be ready to do any amount of work and satisfy the customer.
You have to be detached to your work, or else it will also be satisfying you instead of the customer.
I researched how to market myself and I added commission info on my site. I added every little detail I could think about, because commissioner are a shy breed.
After I had put my commission info, I broadcasted myself through Deviantart by asking to be put into commissioner's lists in Deviantart Groups.
Then, I waited.
Eventually, I got a commission, from someone who I knew well.
The first commission is the hardest to get, but afterwords, people will see that you are being commissioned, and they will think you as credible; therefore testing the waters.
After that, it was just a game of, how fast can I get this done without compromising the quality of the commissions.
Lessons & tips: List all of the info and disclaimers you can think of when listing commission info- this is essential, commissioners are shy.
Advertise yourself: EVERYWHERE.
Offer examples- High quality precise and accurate examples.
Don't price your commissions too high- not too low either. Eventually once you get enough commissioners and renown your name, you can raise the price.
Research. Research ALOT.
Go out of your way to satisfy the customer. For example, I offer "status" updates on my progress of the commissions I offer on my website, and make sure to get the picture details correct- I ask a lot of questions about the color, the composition and many other things. I also inform them prior to starting my commission just in case they haven't read my whole commission info. THIS IS ESSENTIAL to getting a lot of commissioners.
