How I did it: I don't like getting my hair cut by other people, but I wanted a change from the usual haircut I give myself. Since I usually have bad experiences from the hair salons I choose myself, I asked one of my friends where she cuts her hair and went to her hair stylist instead. The haircut is great and the stylist was amazing... I think the lesson is that peer referrals are the way to go.

Lessons & tips:

• Look up the hair salon on a website like "yelp" to see what people say about it
•  Ask friends about good hair stylists
• it's better to get a hair cut "once in a while" by  good, expensive hairstylist and do trims by yourself, then get hair cut by some grouchy lady at a cheap place
