How to become Financially Independent by KT

"The hardest thing I've ever done."

How I did it: This journey was an arduous one. It began with breaking up with my boyfriend of four years, which in and of itself (even though it was unrelated) was a very difficult thing to do. My road to financial independence included:

  • Securing a much cheaper/less luxurious apartment
  • Changing my cell phone plan drastically
  • Selling my car & financing a much less expensive one
  • Cutting out virtually every unnecessary expense

For the most part, I consider this goal accomplished, but I still have a long way to go. The ugly truth is, I was regularly eating canned beans for dinner at one point. It is worth noting that this goal completely changed my life in a way that I was not expecting - I look at money in an entirely different way and actually know how long I have to work to produce enough money for that oh-so-tempting night out at the bars.

I am nearing the end of the feeling of struggling, and I believe that this process has taught me invaluable lessons about myself and what I am (and am not) capable of. I openly admit that this may not be a journey for everyone, but it is worth considering if you are willing to undergo very difficult times for monumental strides of character.

Lessons & tips:

  • Be very specific - know exactly how much money you take home so that you can plan an accurate (not "guessed") budget.
  • Understand that the expenses you cut back on may decrease your comfortable standard of living.
  • Keep pressing forward, even when it seems impossibly hard - you WILL learn how to stand on your own two feet.
