"It was a gradual change, but I'm okay with that."
How I did it:
How did we do it? Eating better and exercising regularly.
For the last few years Mrs. Geek and I have been subscribing to a
weekly menu mailer. That takes care of the "eating better." Okay, so we haven't held to the menu
every week. But we did a pretty good job. That knocked about thirty pounds off for me, and about forty pounds for her.
For the last eight or nine months, we have been attending "hydrofit" classes at the
local pool. It's basically water aerobics with a little resistance training at the end using foam "weights." We actually gained a little weight while the inches were dropping, because muscle weighs more than fat. Anyways, that dropped me down to a 30 inch waist (from 34 last April), and Mrs. Geek to a 29 inch waist (from [redacted] last April).
Lessons & tips:
- Make better eating decisions. Don't starve yourself or deny yourself, but don't take a whole Supreme Lover Supreme Party Size Pizza for yourself either.
- Exercise regularly. Three times a week is good enough for modest goals.
- Do not obsess over pounds and BMI. I think waist-to-height ratio is a more helpful metric. Don't measure yourself every day, either. Daily fluctuation is normal, but it's easy to forget that.
