How to attend a Swing Exchange out of state
"Incredible, dance high, love life kind of moment."
How I did it: Well, since I had not yet attended a Swing dance event outside of Nevada I jumped on the opportunity to head up to Seattle for Camp Jitterbug with some of my dance friends from Portland.
Before I entered the Swing scene in Portland, just a couple months before I had actually never heard of Camp Jitterbug. Every person I met up there spoke so highly of it, and were constantly asking if I to was attending that I figured I must check it out.
Luckily for me I was traveling with a group of people and many of us were sharing hotel rooms. In our room we actually had 8 people! I also happened to carpool to get there.
As for registering, I did so late and was almost locked out of my particular tier though because of such a high demand they thankfully opened more slots on that tier.
As for the rest, I simply took classes, danced until the sun came up, made lots of new friends, and enjoyed the sights. It was certainly one of the highlights of my year in 2011!
Lessons & tips: If you know in advance which event you would like to attend, I would buy the tickets as soon as you can. Usually prices go up as it gets closer and you could save yourself quite a bit of money, which in turn you could use to attend another even.
Try to find a group that is going, or gather a group of your friends together to attend. It saves a lot of money, is part of the adventure, and allows you to be immersed in it. Also, you will have people who learned many of the same things as you and you will be able to use your new moves in your hometown without having to teach others. They will be so jealous, until you show them how :D.
Last tip I can suggest is that you listen for what is highly recommended. There are many dance events out there and you can find the one that fits you. Maybe you want something small and intimate. Maybe you love huge and overflowing. If you gather up information before it can help you have a lot more fun at the event you choose.
Resources: Mostly I gathered information from Stumptown Dancers in Portland, OR.
As for the actual ticket reservation I used Camp Jitterbug's official site: Camp Jitterbug
