How to learn to type by rmelgar

"It's like learning to play a musical instrument"

How I did it: Hi everyone,

As I work as a programmer and also write articles, typing is a very important skill for me, since it has direct impact on my productivity. Nevertheless, I've always been the hunt and peck type of typist, until now :)

I tried to learn to touch type about two years ago, but I couldn't stick to it. The most difficult part is to adapt to the very low speed at the first days.

But this time I've tried harder and now I can say it's definitely worth it! I can easily type without look to the keyboard. Of course my speed is still not that great (about 40 WPM), but it's improving everyday.

I'm realizing that after some time your fingers start to go to the correct key without you even having to think about it. And it feels great!

I've used typingweb.com (I've completed beginner, intermediate and advanced courses) to learn it and it's a fantastic tool. The system is great and it has support to many different languages and keyboard layouts. You don't have to use Typingweb like me, but a specialized course or teaching software will help a lot.

Lessons & tips:

  • Don't quit. Stick to it even if your typing speed get very slow at the beginning.
  • Use a specialized software to help you.
  • Make a decision to change to touch typing and never give in to temptation of hunt and pecking again.

Congratulations

I remember when I was first learning how to type. I took a typing class in high school and it was hard to get used to the key positions. I was always watching my fingers and my best time in that class was 27 WPM. The more I used it though the more comfortable it became and the last time I did a speed test I was doing over 80 WPM.
