How I did it: Two pals of mine are experienced with handguns and handgun safety. They took me out to the local range and, after a safety lesson, we got started. They had me begin with a low-caliber Ruger and as I got more comfortable, we tried different loaner guns the range had available. I got to try a range of handguns, which gave me a good idea of where my comfort level was.
