"painful, but worth it"

How I did it: My initial Marine Corps contract was completed, but I signed a 2 year extension because I knew my unit (4th LAAD) was scheduled to deploy. I just trained with my unit, and we were deployed from summer 2004 until February 2005. 

Lessons & tips: Have a plan ready for your post-deployment if you go the military route. I found my old life impossible to go back to after the experience. The only thing that endured was my marriage, but my wife in incredibly supportive, understanding, and loving.

Resources: At that time the military was the only real option. Since the war ended the best options are government work, contracting, working for an NGO, or you can go the extreme tourist route. If you choose the latter option, the Lonely Planet guide book is the best place to start.
