"Necessity is the mother of invention..."
How I did it: Currently I don't have dental insurance. That's turned out to be a bit of a problem, since my dentist found that one of my teeth had cracked, and I needed a crown! Since I'm unable to pay for it at the moment, I'm holding off on getting the work done until I can pay for it.
Things had been going OK with my typical flossing schedule (which means pretty much never) until about a month or so before my last dentist visit-- I started to get some pings of pain from that tooth. I noticed that if I was meticulous about keeping up with dental hygiene (including flossing and using Listerine) that the pain was reduced quite a bit, so I started using floss on a daily basis.
During the visit, my dentist said that the cracks in the tooth hadn't gotten worse, requiring even more expensive work done. That's good, since I still hadn't gotten to a point where I could afford to get the crown done. In fact, since that visit, the pain I've had has been reduced to almost nothing-- I'm going to take that as a good sign.
Lessons & tips: Probably not going to help a lot of people, but never underestimate the power of fear in motivating you to do something!
