"After quitting smoking, this was a breeze."
How I did it:
I've been biting my nails since I was a kid. I'm now a college graduate with three years working experience and I've stopped biting my nails only just. My technique was quite simple and inexpensive.
I bought a small notepad that fits in a pocket and a pen. Every time I caught myself biting my nails, I'd take the notepad out and write the exact date and time. It didn't matter how long I've been biting before I caught myself, just that I did and that I stopped and wrote down the time stamp. On the first day I had 20 entries, some on the same minute. On the second day I had two. On the third day I had one. On the fourth, none. I carried the notepad and pen for a while longer and I'd catch myself occasionally, but then I'd just write down the date and time and I'd stop biting.
I suppose one could just as well write their time stamps on their mobile/smartphone, but I wanted as much manual labor as possible, without attracting too much attention (since most of my entries were bound to be made at work). This was just meant to interrupt the nail-biting and put my fingers to another task while I "cool down" (so, I think, any easy-to-do task that you need to do with your fingers would do instead of writing down the time stamp).
Lessons & tips:
- Don't stress over catching yourself biting your nails repeatedly. Realize that stopping is a process, like any other. When you push the brakes of a car you don't expect it to stop instantly. While it would be great in some situations, it just isn't a very realistic thing to expect.
- Take the time to behold the beauty of your healing nails. If you like, you can use nail polish to make them prettier. Myself, I like to observe the healing process and take pride in the fact that my nails look like that without faking them with make-up. Sure, they'll look terrible immediately after you stop biting them with all the flaking skin, but just learn to accept that as a step towards your goal.
- Remember to keep your hands properly hydrated while they are healing, both from within (by drinking enough water), and without (by using the correct hand cream and/or lotion for your skin type).
