How to see transit of Venus by Spyrunner

"In a filtered telescope I saw a black dot on the sun."

How I did it: I was driving around last evening and I saw a telescope set up in front of a school.  There were several people milling around. I told my wife that there is a transit of Venus and this is my opportunity to see it.  Unfortunately, by the time we turned around and found the telescope, a huge cloud obscured the view.  The astronomer assured me that he would be there until the sun set.  As we had not eaten, we left to find a restaurant.  On the way back, we took a wrong turn and it took us a while to find the school.  Luckily, the clouds were gone, and I had a great view of Venus in front of the sun.

Lessons & tips: Only look at the sun with the correct equipment.  Use a welder's mask or eclipse glasses. 
See if any local astronomers are showing this.  The next one is in 105 years. 

Resources: a helpful local amateur astronomer.

Great that you got to see it!

I had a pair of special glasses left over from viewing the eclipse last month that I used to view it. It was interesting to see how small Venus is compared to the Sun from our perspective. I shared the view with some of my neighbors, and we all were happy to have witnessed the event.
