How to go to the opera by welpke

"It can be great -but pick wisely!"

How I did it: In Budapest i experienced for the first time in my life what an opera is all about. As an opera newbie i decided to see a famous play (an opera that everybody knows). We saw Madame Butterfly. So the opera building was amazing - with lots of gold on the ceilings - a big chandelier and all those beautiful opera stalls and boxes. Just like in the movies.

But i made one big mistake. Madame Butterfly is a very tragic opera (with suicide, drama...). I think it was better if i had chosen a more humoristic play. The plot of the opera was very heavy material and too be honest sometimes it was a bit boring.

But ofcourse i gave opera a second chance. Back in Belgium we have a kind of opera festival in open air (very beautiful experience) and this time it was a playfull and humoristic opera. It called "Die Lustige witwe" and i really enjoyed it. It was very funny and the singing was still beautiful. I liked the story of the opera very much. There was even a little french cancan in it! Fabulous!

So yes opera can be very amazing and worth doing this! But choose the right one!

The second act takes place at a masquerade ball, and often “guest stars” (sometimes operatic performers, sometimes not) perform at the ball, so every production is unique.

is another comic opera, one of my favorites. Lots of silliness, mistaken identity, etc. Good fun!
