Congrats on achieving the almost impossible! I am working on this as well.
How I did it: After receiving a lecture from my 10 year old for the umpteenth time I decided it was time for me to make some positive changes in my life. I removed all my earrings, donated 16 inches of hair to locks of love and finally got a "grown up" haircut at age 34. In addition to the image change I also quit smoking. All of these things were on my daughter's list of things I needed to change.
Lessons & tips: Find a reason that matters to you. In my case it was being a better example for my daughter.
Resources: I used the Nicotine Patch, it really took the edge off. I'd tried to quit cold turkey 3 times before but it never stuck.
