How to live in France
How I did it: The study abroad program at my university. I first went to study in France for 3 1/2 weeks during the summer and enjoyed it so well that I knew I had to go back for longer. (Well, that and I fell in love with a french guy while I was there.) I worked three jobs to save up enough money, applied for ten zillion scholarships (received not many) and am lucky enough to have parents who are willing and able to help me out. I couldn't believe the red tape involved in just a simple student visa, but I got everything worked out.
Lessons & tips: Start the visa process as soon as possible. Be aware that you will likely have to go far away to get your visa. I live in Kansas and had to go to Chicago. Study-abroad programs seem to be geared towards the rich, but they're possible even if you're more like me. What helped me the most was having a french boyfriend, his family, and my temporary host family all willing to help me. If at all possible, I recommend getting to some natives. They help. A lot.
