How I did it: I have horrible credit so I went to one of those car lots where you are a little scared that you will be mugged along the way to your test drive. It worked and I found a car that was in my range and budget and my only qualifier to get a loan was that I had a job. the car had issues, which I expected it to. You get what you pay for - afterall. But I have paid payments for just over 2 years and it has been paid off. Now it's miiiiine!

There were troubles along the way. Like, I bought one car off of craigslist and it died the next day. My husband also crashed one of the cars and so I had to start over. I didn't give up though. I made my payments on time and kept my insurance up to date and now I own it.

Lessons & tips:

• Search around for the best deal
• Get help if you need it
• Take an experienced car person with you on the search
• Don't just get the first car that you find
