How I did it: We had a bookshelf that my parents had given to us... nothing fancy but had removable/adjustable shelves (I've seen similar items at our local re-use center for $5-25 depending on condition).
We went to Lowe's bought some wood that was the same thickness and width and had it cut to match the length of the shelves. I also went to a fabric store and bought several fuzzy fabrics and some pillow stuffing to cover the shelves with.
We cut circular holes in each of the shelves at different positions in each shelf. We covered the shelves with the fabrics with the pillow stuffing in between the shelf and the fabric and then reassembled everything.
Lessons & tips: We didn't have the right tools to do anything and it took us so long b/c we did it all after work each day.
Having the right tools would probably make it go a LOT faster.
Covering the circular holes with the fabric was easiest with 2 people and a staple gun... or something similar. I used a bunch of smaller fabric pieces (leftover from cutting holes in the fabric for the shelves themselves) and it seems to work well.
