How I did it: I started on LT and bought a lifetime account about almost two years ago, because I knew I had more than 200 books. I was preparing for a move, so I considered the $25 expense well worthwhile, given that so many of my books were about to go into storage.

It's incredibly useful for me because, as a college student, I move around a lot and therefore my collection is often sadly fragmented. This way I keep track of what I have and where it is (with tags!), not to mention enjoying the exquisite ease of crossreferencing.

And I've even hooked some of my friends on it, which makes it even more fun. And it points the way toward similar books. And and and...
