How to see a comet or a meteor shower

How I did it: I lay on my back....no, lets go back to the beginning.
It was when I was pretty young, 13/14, and my fav cousin was round and we were all mucking about and then I cannot really remember the reasons for it but we went outside and all lay down and started counting the starts and then we saw one, two, three, four.....moving, falling, shooting!
It was utterly beautiful and I know I will never ever forget it.
