How I did it: I immersed myself in books and listened to France culture all the time, and of course all those French people around me speaking French helped a little.

Lessons & tips: For every new vocabulary word you learn try to repeat it in five different sentences within a short time-frame, if you're more advanced try to look up French words by their definition (in French), and then maybe a week or two later look up the English translation, I find that it helps to ground the meaning but not link it in your brain to English words (which will slow down your thought process)
