How to see a shooting star

"I was just looking at a random area of the sky and I saw a shooting star streak through that exact spot. Awesome!"
How I did it: I was just patient and stood looking at one spot for a few minutes, then I'd focus on another part of the sky for a few minutes. Next thing I knew, a meteor streaked upwards then disappeared. Easy. It helped that I was out at Blue Mesa Reservoir away from city lights. :)
