How I did it: It sounds like cheating - but I decided to start with a small debt would be easy to pay off.  It was a card that had a debt of $300 on it.  I looked in my room and found 6 textbooks that I didn't need any more.  I went to ebay/half.com and listed them for sale.  For listing the books - all I had to do was type in the ISBN and link the sales account with my bank account.  I looked at the prices that others had the books listed for & I put my books for sale for a couple dollars less than the others' books.  I chose to do this just at the start of the semester & 5 of the 6 books sold in a week.  They sold for a total of $277 (after commission).  I used that money & $23 more to pay it off the card in full. 

Lessons & tips: We all get into debt by little things.  I've decided to get back out of debt the same way.  I found $277 from selling books I didn't need.  I figure if I can find more little things either to sell, or ways to earn money, etc - and if you did that once a month - that's over $3,000 in a year.  Not much, but I've at least decided - something is better than nothing!
