How to take a yoga class 3+ times a week
"Making Yoga a part of my life has been an uplifting and empowering experience."
How I did it:
- 3 months earlier I did yoga at home EVERY night - but focused only on basic things.
- was inspired by 2 friends - one who has been doing it her whole life, and another who has a similar body type as I do, and who recently made it part of her life.
- decided to find a studio that had NO MIRRORS, and gentle instructors who understood that people are at many different skill levels.
- started out with an unlimited monthly membership
- committed myself to go 2 week days and one weekend day
- I found that I craved going to yoga class, and came to see it as a refuge, a place to regroup and focus on my body.
Lessons & tips: Here are some things to try and questions to ask yourself:
- try doing basic stretches like touching your toes, simple spinal twists, gentle backbends.
- do you find that you aren't as flexible as you used to be?
- do you want to regain some of that flexibility so that you can be more active and experience more of life?
- do you need to relieve stress and learn to focus
Resources:
- get a thick yoga mat - more comfortable on your knees
- set short term goals - sometimes just getting through the class, sometimes to go to a certain number of classes a week.
- wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move and that you won't feel exposed. this is not a fashion contest.
- don't eat 1.5 hrs before class - can't stretch on an over full tummy.
- use the bathroom before you start class
- bring a small towel cause you will sweat, and water for the same reason
- don't be afraid of using straps and blocks and modifying poses
