How I did it: I studied abroad in Barcelona, and visited the city several other times during college. I made a point of walking to the church or touring it each time I went.
Lessons & tips: See it by night, away from the crowds and daytime hustle and bustle. Then you can go back, take the tours, and really examine it, but for a first impression - nighttime is best.
