How to hitchhike
How I did it: Wanting to get downtown, my friend and I walked down the street to a gas station and asked a guy at the pump if he was going West. He gave us a ride and we asked him questions like Where are you from? What do you do? Where have you been? The guy was real chill and you could tell he was happy to have people to tell his stories to. It was truly awesome.
He dropped us at a gas station where we were turned down a few times. Eventually we ended up walking to another gas station where no one was going our way. And then walking some more. But that part was fun, too.
Lessons & tips: The hardest part (being out first time hitching) was the walk to the gas station. The asking and the car ride were cake walks compared to the mental knuckle crunching done en route to the Circle K.
Also, smile when you approach people for rides. Otherwise I think it looks a bit ominous.
Consider who you are asking. Put yourself in their shoes. If it is a mother with her kids, you aren't gonna get a ride. Solo women are usually no's, too.
