How I did it: Arranged a short term rental property before arrival. Drove cross country from DC to Los Angeles and shipped the car from Long Beach to Kauai. Upon arrival, arranged a longer-term apartment.

In Jan 2008, we paid just under $1,000 to ship our car from CA to Kauai. It took 11 days to arrive on island. HI has taxes required for cars brought from the mainland, but I think as long as it’s 2 years or older you don’t have to pay them. We used Matson, which can give more specific information about shipping.
We did have employment secured as we were able to keep our mainland job and work remotely via internet. As such, I can’t provide any info on job hunting on island.
