How to get dreadlocks
How I did it: A friend sectioned off my hair and teased the hell out of each section, then rolled it and rubber banded it until it locked in. It took at least a month for me to feel like they would stay. From there, washing was difficult and they tended to keep water so long that they would smell, so the less I washed them, the more clean they seemed to be.
Lessons & tips: I battled with dreadlocks because I love how they look, I love what they symbolize (initially). But what I've learned from my 3 years with them, is that they can be incredibly dangerous in terms of what message they portray. White people cannot apply a Black-power hairstyle with roots in religion, political uprising and celebratory difference like it was an accessory.
