How to go back to work
How I did it: Persistance, hard work, going with the flow and some sorely needed good luck. I applied to everything that I was qualified for. I took a couple of contract jobs in areas where I did not have much experience. It was harder for me to complete with the experienced folks, but the extra effort and stress was worth it. The experience I gained as a contractor gave me the foot in the door that led to my new position.
Lessons & tips: Contracting can be tough. As a contractor, I was held to a much higher standard than full time employees doing the same job. The money was pretty good but no benefits or much consideration for the contractors. Be very specific in your questions and get all the details agreed upon written in your contract. Ask friends that have contracted what you need to be concerned about. Contracting has both positives and negatives. It is a great way to get into a company, work hard and make a good impression. It is also a great way to find out about the culture and how the company is run as well as gain new skills.
Resources: My best advice came from the other contractors on the project. Network and make friends!
