"This was a very special goal for me. Makes me feel like I still have some semblance of youth and athletic ability left. :)"
How I did it: After discussing this with some fellow 43 thing members we decided to pursure this goal. I broke down the 5000 miles to 12 months, making the summer months higher mileage than the winter ones of course for weather reasons. Then started accomplishing the months goal... don't focus so much on the 5000 miles just accomplish your months mileage and you do that and it all adds up.
Lessons & tips: Be friends with your local bicycle mechanic... I was able to get work done faster because he knew me and I was friendly with him. The shop would be back logued but he would fit my broken spoke in for example that day.
Also keep your and the safety of others always in the front of your mind! I was very fortunate and did not have too many close calls or anything like that. I did have one close call onf the bicycle path with a fellow cyclist but no harm no foul.
