How to make an amigurumi
How I did it: I made two stuffed knitted toys for the Helping Kids at Hopkins (RavLink) group on Ravelry, but I wanted to make a classic crochet amigurumi.
I took a three hour crochet class at Stitches East and sat down pretty soon to crank out my first amigurumi. I used some purple donated yarn on hand and the smallest hook I had which made a nice tight fabric. In two evenings I had my first crochet amigurumi, a little purple bird that fits in the palm of my hand.
Now I'm working on a monkey!
Lessons & tips: Use a smaller crochet hook than you think you need so stuffing doesn't show. This is especially important when using yarn remnant yarns and not yarn as specified in a pattern. It's also important if the toy is going to be used by a child. Mine is going to a pediatric ICU patient and may need to be washed a lot. A tight fabric is important.
