How to cycle 5000 miles in 2008
How I did it: Broke down the miles to how many would be needed each month, warm weather months got more miles. Then broke the months down to weeks and focused on how many miles were needed that week. When I was having a strong week I'd do more miles because I knew I'd also have bad weeks, so putting miles in the bank was a plus.
It also help that I stayed healthy, getting enough rest to make sure I didn't put myself in a place where my body would turn against me.
Lessons & tips: It is helpful if you have bike tools and some knowledge on how to make repairs (even if only minor ones) because in the middle of summer, you don't have to wait for your local bike mechanic to free up. There are many books on bike maintenance and also Park Tools offers a good course often held at local bike shops on bike repair. I took that a few years ago in the middle of February as a way to help feed my cycling need when the weather sucks. Making friends with you local bike shop also helps… they are more willing to go the extra mile to get you back on the road even when they are busy.

5000 miles is a lot to bike in a year. And you live in NJ! That makes it all the more fantastic with the cold weather for half the year.
