How to go on a road trip with no predetermined destination

How I did it: bought a train ticket on a whim, headed for indianapolis. took a bus from indianapolis to independence, kansas. drove with a friend to oklahoma city, then dallas. friend from dallas drove me to austin, tx. taking a bus from dallas to grand rapids, michigan just in time for christmas.
Lessons & tips: make friends in other cities, states, regions. carry cash on your person. be flexible--plans will change.
