How to have a dinner party
How I did it: I decided to have a dinner party themed around my travels in Central America. I had to cook for a Muslim and Jew (no pork), vegetarian (no meat at all), and someone with a ton of food allergies (no citrus, onion, and especially no wheat). While I didn't make every part of the meal edible by everyone, there was something for everyone. I made fajitas (Mexico, both vegetarian and beef), pok chuk (a traditional Yucatecan pork dish), rundon (A Carribean Costa Rican coconut stew), patacones (fried plaintains from Costa Rica), licuados (fruit juice drinks found everywhere) and gallo pinto (beans and rice from Costa Rica). I think I even had some Guatamalen hot chocolate!
Lessons & tips: This was my second dinner party and I have come to realize everyone will enjoy themselves a lot more than me. I will be in the kitchen for many hours, hoping everyone is having fun. One way to mix it up is to have people help prepare things. I even learned a better way to make guacamole! It's also a fun way for kids to get involved.
