How I did it: I planned and saved but it all came down to just buying the plane ticket and going from there. I think once I had the ticket and a firm deadline of when I'd be going it was easier to plan for it.  I went with a general outline of things I wanted to see and do and just played the rest by ear.

Lessons & tips: Call your bank before you leave to let them know you'll be overseas. Buy a hairdryer once you get there - my hairdryer never did work well with the adaptors. Write down what you're taking pictures of (especially if you take a bus tour - I have great pictures, but I'm just not sure what they are). Oh, and get an oyster card once you're there - it's the best way to get around on the Tube and buses.
