How I did it: Luck, actually - I saw a writer's group opening up in my college and I applied. I read three-page five minute things every two months or so to a packed coffeehouse. I don't really know if my stories are that good, but my writer's group thinks I'm pretty good.I wouldn't wait for your college to start one up like I did, though - I learned the existences of two others within my city after joining. Do some Googling.
