Rewarding=yes yes yes

Art therapy is a fascinating and rewarding field. I can’t recommend it enough! I absolutely love every moment of my work.

It is amazing, because you can really do anything with it…there are people I went to school with who are working in other countries. People working with all ages (birth to senior citizens) People working in hospitals, schools, jails, community centers, museums, all over.

You need a master’s degree (so undergrad + two years in grad school) for the most part…requirements vary for different states & countries.

As for work experience—do as much as you can with as many different kinds of people as you can. Volunteer at homeless shelters. Teach. Shadow professionals in hospitals. Anything you can to get exeperience.

Check out some of the art therapy associations—they would have all the resources for the licensing requirements in your area. And feel free to ask me any more questions!

That is Great!

I am also interested in entering NYU for the Art therapy graduate program. Do you have any advice on what I have to do to get into the program. I currently go to a college in NJ. What can I do or have to do to guarantee myself a spot. For example how high does my GPA have to be? Volunteer work? If you can tell me what you did or advice me on what I should do it would be much appreciated.
If you can contact me here or on fatemachoukeir@gmail.com that would be great.

hello!

Your story is made me even more interested in becoming an art therapist. I am going to college next year (2010). I’m planning to go to a UC (university of California – much cheaper). To become get a Master’s degree in Art therapy, should a get a BA in Art (studio art? or art in general? or psychology?). Also, what other classes do you recommend me in taking? Should I also look into recreational therapy as well? What is the job outlook? How much is the average salary? Do you work with teams?

Please reply back, or email me back at linnylinh91@yahoo.com
I really look forward to your response. Thank you so much for inspiring me. I had such a difficulty choosing a career. To come across art therapy as a potential career is extremely good news. Now, I’m a bit goal-oriented. :D
