How to keep a plant alive

"Buy a VERY SMALL plant all the big ones died."
How I did it: When I got my condo in April in San Diego I had 3 plants... one about 3 feet tall, one about 1 foot tall, and one 6 inches tall. They all died little by little except the small one... those small ones are strong, they look Sooo dead and then you give it water and it just comes back to life and grows leaves again, the big ones just cant handle the chaos.
