How to buy better clothes
How I did it: By denying my inner cheapskate and buying classic items. I will say these are classic for MY STYLE not necessarily basic black classic. You won't catch me in dowdy brown pants suits.
The budgetfashionista.com or other clothes sites have lists of basic items.
Next on my list a white/ cream trench coat.
Lessons & tips: Look for small details that make an item worth wearing. I really like the buttons on an otherwise plain sweater from JCREW for instance.
Student or Teacher discounts etc. I save 15% on top of all other discounts at Jcrew stores by showing my staff University ID. many other retailers have similar, but little known discounts for teachers, seniors (beginning at 50), students etc. I noticed the Jcrew discount on a poster on a dressing room wall
Get things tailored as needed. This usually costs money unless you buy in store where places like Brooks Bros, Jcrew, Banana Republic etc offer free or low cost tailoring---and if they get it wrong you are not stuck with the item
Resources: With the economy in the tank now is the time to pick up a basic black suit (or whatever) for 50% or more
