How I did it: I looked around at some how-to websites and practiced on my own hair a lot, then practiced on my sister and friends.

If you're braiding your own hair it's easier to practice with two pigtails at the side of your head rather than one braid at the back where it's more difficult to see.

Lessons & tips:

• Keep practicing - hair braids won't necessarily be even and neat the first time.
• Try braiding ribbons into your hair.
• Herringbone braids are time-consuming but fairly easy to do.
• Try simpler braids to begin with, then work your way up to more complicated hairstyles.

Resources: This website is great for inspiration - but many of the braids pictured here are way to elaborate for beginners. This site also.

Look around for some how-to videos online or get a knowing friend to help you learn to braid - it's easier to learn in person.
