How to climb a mountain
How I did it: Asked by a friend to join him we set out to hike Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. With little hiking experience, and at the time being a heavy smoker this seemed like a daunting task. I thought of my father who was battling cancer and kept saying to myself, "if he can fight cancer I can climb this Mountain!"
As it turned out making it up the mountain was the easy part for me. Coming back down, tired, dehydrated without water, and wearing improper footwear, was the true challenge! I remember saying to myself, "Every step you take gets you one step closer to the bottom!"
It sounds corny and cliche', but that was literally how I got myself down.
After the aches and pains wore off I couldn't believe I had done it. I use that day to compare difficult things in my life and often say, "If I can Climb a mountain I can....."
