How to hike a fourteener
"I did the hike to the top of Mt Whitney (14496 ft elevation) in one day, back in 1989."
How I did it: This may be a cheat, but I listed a goal I had already done (but I want more fourteeners!). After finishing the draft of my MS these in 1989 I took a 7 week car trip up and down the southwest, and hit the tops of Lassen and Mt Wheeler (Nevada, a shade under 13000) along with visits to Crater Lake, Mt St Helens, and, um.... I am forgetting.
Along with a friend, we hit the start of the Mt Whitney trail (8300 ft) early in the morning and emerged almost at sunset, 22 miles of trail later and 6200 ft elevation change.
Lessons & tips: It would be better staged to give your body time to adjust to the elevations, but I was young and eager.
