How to save 6 months of living expenses
"Having savings makes life less stressful when the unexpected happens."
How I did it: I started saving a little each month in college. I had about 2 month's expenses in college. Once I graduated I slowly increased my savings while paying a little extra on my student loans. Eventually I had enough for a down payment on a house! Then I had to start over - saving a little each month. As my expenses increased (house repairs, car expenses, more insurance, etc), I had to increase the amount of savings.
Lessons & tips: Save $5 a a week, then $10, $100, etc. What ever you can, just set a little aside.
A trick I do is I have my paycheck direct deposited to my savings account, then auto-transfer a monthly budgeted amount into my checking account for bills and living expenses. I find I save a lot more money this way.
