How to learn LaTeX
How I did it: The first thing I got was TextMate, the editor, for Mac. Textmate ships with several built-ins for LaTeX.
Step two, download and install Skim. When you preview LaTeX text in Textmate, you'll want to use Skim for the preview. It remembers which page you were on, etc.
Alter Textmate to use Skim in the LaTeX bundle.
OK, so now you can edit. Here's a handy trick. In Textmate, do a File -> New from template -> latex -> article.
Viola! You can do command-R and preview the template. From here, you can start writing a basic document!
Additional fancy bits like italics, bold, etc. can be gleaned from the LaTeX menu in textmate. If you have a particular task ( how do i put a box around the text, how do I write an 'o' with a long sound bar over it? ), there are many internet resources.
The upside is that if you get one difficult document written, you can always refer to it for howto.
