How I did it: I used blogger to set up my Rose City Reader blog. Mine is a book blog that I describe as "book notes from a compulsive 'list' reader." I wanted to give it some focus, so I try to concentrate on the "list" idea, tapping into my compulsion to make and follow reading lists. If a book won a prize or got named on a "Must Read" list, then I want to read it.
So I use my blog to organize my reading lists. I am working on putting up a post for every book list that I am working on. The, when I read one of those books, I try to post a review of it and link the review post to the list post. Likewise, I am working on separate posts listing all the books by my favorite authors.
It only took minutes to set up my blog, but it has taken me many months to get it loaded with content. I am still working on getting all the lists and authors' bibliographies posted. But I look forward to working on my blog.
Lessons & tips: The main rule I tried to follow is that blogging is supposed to be a fun hobby, not a chore. "Blogging Without Obligation" is my motto.
Another thing I learned is that, if you want people to read your blog, you have to read other people's blogs. If you leave comments on other blogs, those people will usually visit our blog. That is a good way to build up a reader base.
