How to ride a Vespa
How I did it: 10 easy steps (these instructions apply to a 4-speed *real* Vespa):
1. Turn key and engine kill to "on", pull out the choke knob.
2. Brace yourself and kick the Vespa over 5 or 6 times.
3. Curse loudly.
4. Kick it over 7 more times, wow it started!
5. Wait 5 minutes for the Vespa to warm up (don't forget to push the choke back in or the fumes will kill ya).
6. Jump on, pull in the clutch lever and pop the tranny up into first gear.
7. Give it a little gas and let out the clutch lever slowly.
8. Hell yeah, here we go!
9. Listen to the engine wind up...then let off the gas, pull in the clutch lever and twist down into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as needed.
10. Drag your knee in the corners and keep your eye out for THE MAN!
Lessons & tips: Don't be afraid of the machine or intimidated by other scooterists. Take your time, and remember that shifting a scooter is just like shifting a car. Have fun!
