How I did it: Being able to spin fire might be one of the coolest feelings there are.  Go for it!  When learning non-fire poi before lighting up (or even if you never plan to), go to HomeofPoi.com for a list of tricks from beginner to advanced to find the sequence in which you should learn moves so that your progression will be a breeze.  My first moves were the corkscrew, the butterfly and then the three-beat weave.  Once you get all three of these down, every move following is MUCH easier.  The three-beat weave is positively infuriating if you let it be, but just practice with one poi with one hand, and then the other.
