How to steal a street sign

"I've had two street signs, one stolen, one found, both unexpected."
How I did it: The stolen street sign was the result of an auto accident, where we ran into a cattle crossing sign on the edge of a cliff. Of course the story was so crazy, we stole the sign that we'd knocked over as proof of the tale.
The found street sign was near a dumpster of my apartment complex, and I took it home. It said "Sunshine" on it, and being of the more nocturnal, heavy-shades type at the time, I hung it on the wall in my living room and joked that that was the only way sunshine would get into my house.
Lessons & tips: Not worth the potential jail time to steal or posses. Get a reproduction if you must have a massive metal sign bedecking your walls.
