How to try bikram yoga
"Definitely worth trying, but there are a few pitfalls."
How I did it:
I'd been talking about this for a while and finally got around to it when I had some time over the break. I went to YogaOne in Houston, which gave me no problems. However, I have a few words of advice:
1. Price: a lot of "hot yoga" places - that is, not the official Bikram places - charge much less, and also do a lot of deals, like the one I tried, where you pay $10 for unlimited classes for 10 days. This way you don't have to buy one of those lesson packs for a lot of money if you're not sure yet. Plus drop-in rates are usually about $20, which is ridiculous.
2. Hydration: I felt a little nauseated so I would recommend not eating anything for a little while before. Also, bring a big bottle of water, and drink water all day so you are well hydrated before class.
3. Sweat: I wore a t-shirt and shorts and soon I was down to the sports bra. Wear as little as possible, and steer your mat clear of big sweaty men because the B.O. is a little overwhelming towards the end of class. Also, the sweat makes it a lot harder to hold balance poses because you keep sliding all over the place. Bring a towel to dry off your face and hands.
