How to make a tutu
"a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do"
How I did it: I looked at tutorials on the internet, and browsed photos on Flickr for inspiration. Some people make tutus like gathered skirts, but I opted for cutting the fabric into strips and knotting it onto a length of elastic. I used 4 metres of light grey and 1/2 metre of dark grey organza, but I could easily have used them in equal measure.
Lessons & tips:
- More opaque colours look better.
- If you're working with strips, two or more colours look really nice.
- There are many different types of tulle, netting, organza, etc. Look carefully at photos and the fabric you're buying to determine how stiff you want your tutu to be. Also, some fabrics will be very scratchy.
- Think about what length you want your tutu to be. The length of your strips will be twice the length of your tutu, and if your fabric isn't wide enough, you'll need to cut it lengthwise.
- Messy is ok!
