How I did it: Take the overnight train from Guangzhou, through Hunan province to arrive at 6am. No dramas. Try to communicate with the other guy in your cabin, to no avail.
Lessons & tips: Avoid the "Foreigners counter" at the train station, just leave the train station. Go directly to the 100 Flowers Hostel - don't let anyone ring ahead for you, they will bullshit you there are no rooms.
